The House (DOM) | Dir.:Zuzana
Liová | Slovakia | Czech Republic|2011|90'
Stone by stone, Imrich is
building a small house for his daughter Eva almost entirely on his own.
But for
Eva, who is about to graduate from school, the prospect of moving into the
house is about as appealing as being imprisoned in a jail she herself has
helped to build.
She has very different plans for her future.
Her grumpy,
stingy, controlling father has already broken with Eva’s sister, Jana, after
she got herself involved with a scoundrel with whom she now has three children.
So the father is twice as vigilant with Eva, but she still manages to indulge
in a few little freedoms: skipping school for a couple of days, doing little
jobs to save up cash for the trip she longs to make to London, and an affair
with an older man who turns out to be her English teacher.
A generational
conflict in a milieu where even the minor characters are described in such
detail that one suspects the film has been modeled on directors like Mike Leigh
or Ken Loach.
But the speechlessness and deeply entrenched feelings of the
parent generation here also reflect the profound impact of radical social
change and the struggle to come to terms with that change.
This makes Zuzana
Liová’s feature a notable example of young, intelligent cinema from Eastern
Europe.

In 1945, Finland's Kellokoski
Psychiatric Hospital welcomes a new patient, former cabaret dancer Anna
Lappalainen.
Diagnosed with manic depression and schizophrenia, she refuses to
answer to her real name, insisting instead that she is a Princess of the
British royal family.
“Princess” demands to be treated with respect, declares
the hospital her castle, and holds court with a makeshift collection of
ladies-in-waiting.
The primitive psychiatric procedures of the time—insulin
shots, electroshock therapy, and malaria treatments—have no effect on her
condition, and soon the stern Doctor Grotenfelt recommends the modern procedure
of lobotomy to end her royal delusions.
But before his treatment can begin,
Princess's eccentric grande dame manner has a surprisingly positive effect on
the staff, the patients, and the local villagers.
Based on a true story,
actress Katja Küttner won the Finnish Jussi Prize for her charismatic
performance as a woman who is judged ill by society, but whose presence heals
all around her.
Installation
of love | (Instalacija ljubezni) |Dir.: Maja Weiss | Slovenia|2007|98'

Love" is a bizarre and crazy satire constructed as a film in a film in a
film.
For her first feature film "Guardian of the Frontier", Maja
Weiss, the director and co-writer won Manfred Salzgeber award for the most
innovative European film at Berlinale 2002.
"Installation of Love" is
also a unique project concerning the story telling even though that the main
plot of the film is conventional and universal.
It is a search for love, or how
to rediscover or re-install love in your life - love in its widest sense.
32A (32A) | Dir.: Marian Quinn | Ireland|2008|89'
This story is set in the
"in-between" time of a girl's life, when she is no longer a child and
not yet a woman.
We open with our heroine, Maeve, putting on her new snow white
bra, and stepping out into the world as a young woman.
She has an obsession
with breasts and bras and can't help but stare at other girls and women, even
the head nun doesn't escape her gaze.
Otherwise, her world revolves around her
three friends, Ruth, Claire and Orla, who are more experienced in the ways of
the world.
They wear bras already (except Claire the feminist) and they've all
had boyfriends.
The new bra is a start but they really hope Maeve can find a
fella, even offering kissing lessons to prepare her.
What no one expects, least
of all Maeve, is that she should snare the local sixteen-year old heartthrob.
Maeve is so smitten with him that she lets her friends down when they need her
the most.
In trouble with her friends and in school, she gets dumped by the
heartthrob when she sneaks into the local dance with him and he leaves with
another girl.
Her parents find out and she ends up in trouble at home, where
she takes on extra domestic duties.
She does the laundry and even her bra has
lost its former brilliance. Maeve realizes what she has lost.
Her friends rally
round for her 14th birthday, Maeve returns to the fold a little older and a
little wiser.

for a transfer.
And so she leaves, a little sad and a little curious about what
